Collecting Phonecards

A Long, long time ago, there was a clever little gadget called the phonecard.

Phonecards were introduced to the UK in the 1980's, and proved to be one of the most popular and innovative products of the time, allowing users to use payphones without the need for bulky change.

Of course, we all know how the story ends: the miniaturization of mobile communications - or mobile phones to you - put paid to the popularity of the phonecard. Although they are still available from many retailers, the demand for this product has steadily declined as the popularity of the mobile phone has increased.

However, the practice of collecting phonecards remains relatively strong, and some cards can fetch high prices (on average, around £50) among keen collectors. Many phonecards are issued in sets and have a limited production run, which makes them a desirable addition to any collector's checklist.

Phonecards tend to feature photos and artwork of a variety of subjects, so as to make them more appealing to a wider target market than just the collector. The range of subjects featured on such cards are limitless, and the most popular themes revolve around films, celebrities, pop stars and musicals. Even cards that carry corporate identities are collectable, with the Coca-Cola card being popular with collectors.

Many collectors start off by obtaining every phonecard they can lay their hands on - even if the design is plain. This is the most easiest way of starting your collection, although if you want an impressive collection that'll be worth paying good money for, specialize in one genre that'll attract interest from buyers in the future.

A final word of warning: collectors will only pay good money for unused cards, so don't be tempted to make use of them or you could be damaging your future investment!
